Preparations

Well twenty days to lift off and counting. I have started the preparations for the flight, (got to get my priorities right) twenty hours plus on an aeroplane is not quite my vision of paradise. iPod loaded with assorted music, pod casts and films to occupy me on this my longest journey to date on a flying machine. Previous longest flight was a good few years ago now to Chicago. I still remember the interminable boredom of that flight pre iPod of course!
I have, after much deliberation chosen a book to read on the flight, The Age of Wonder by Richard Holmes.
I heard the author only last week on a BBC Radio 4 program talking about this his most recent tome and it seemed to ring the bells for me. Could not resist a little peak into it before the off. Chapter 1 tells of Joseph Bank's trip with Captain Cook on the HMS Endeavour. Banks was the official botanist on the historic voyage of discovery untaken by Cook sailing from Plymouth in 1768 arriving Botany Bay 1770. I will be in a way following Cooks journey along the east coast of Australia, Sydney, Cairns, Port Douglas (locally known just as Port) and beyond to Cape Tribulation where Cook went aground on the Great Barrier Reef.
